SASSA Launches Public Awareness Campaign to Combat SRD Grant Scams

Scammers are constantly finding new ways to exploit vulnerable beneficiaries of the SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant, but the government is fighting back! The Department of Social Development (DSD) has announced the launch of public education campaigns to help grant recipients identify scams and avoid fraudulent websites.

With thousands of South Africans depending on the SRD grant for survival, fraudsters are using fake websites, SMS messages, and social media ads to steal personal information and trick people into paying ‘processing fees’ for non-existent benefits.

Common SRD Grant Scams to Watch Out For

🚨 Fake Websites: Fraudsters create websites that look like the official SASSA portal and ask beneficiaries to enter personal details.
🚨 SMS & WhatsApp Scams: Messages claiming that your grant is “on hold” or needs “re-verification” and directing you to a fake link.
🚨 Upfront Payment Scams: Scammers ask beneficiaries to pay a ‘service fee’ to speed up or secure their SRD grant approval.
🚨 Imposter Calls: Criminals posing as SASSA officials call beneficiaries asking for ID numbers, bank details, or OTP codes.

How to Stay Safe & Protect Your Grant

Only use the official SASSA website: The correct website for SRD grant applications and updates is https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
Never share personal details via SMS or WhatsApp: SASSA does not request banking details or passwords via phone calls or messages.
Ignore messages asking for payment: The SRD grant is 100% free to apply for and collect—no extra fees are required.
Verify information with SASSA directly: Call the toll-free helpline at 0800 60 10 11 for any grant-related concerns.

Government’s Commitment to Protecting Beneficiaries

As part of this nationwide awareness campaign, the DSD and SASSA will use radio, social media, community workshops, and print media to spread the message:

💡 “Protecting your grant starts with being informed! #YourGrantYourRight”

By staying alert and informed, beneficiaries can avoid financial loss and ensure that their SRD grant reaches them safely.
